A Difference-Making Education

On May 22, 2010 I was awarded and conferred the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Services with a minor in Religious Studies. That day symbolized the end of a journey, but it also symbolized the beginning of a new task: TO MAKE THE USE OF MY EDUCATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

I was thinking this as I have been in deep dialogue tonight with fellow facebook members regarding issues such as women preachers and implications of gender roles in society and the Bible. What I loved about the conversation was that no one was mad and everybody expressed their points and seemed open minded in the conversation. Grant it we still left the conversation with our beliefs but we were all challenged in some way.

The goals of my education are the following: (in addition to getting a good job and having a good career which is obvious)
1. To challenge people's thinking in a positive/new way.
2. To make a difference in the lives of those who are hurting, disempowered, discouraged and disenfranchised.
3. To be a testimony that through God you can do all things as Christ gives you strength.

Tonight I make a vow to never use my degree (or any other degrees I get) as a way to make myself look better than anyone or as if I have all the knowledge. I vow to use my degree as a way to inform people, challenge people's thinking on a variety of subjects, be teachable/being a lifelong learner, and to make a difference in my community, church, work place and society as a whole. Education should NEVER be used as a weapon to hurt someone. It should always be there to help people look deep at various issues.

Tonight I vow to be someone that has a "difference-making education." Let's be lifelong learners and impact our communities in a positive light!!!
